Self Help Groups and Micro-finance for Rural Women

In the Gadag and Dharwad Areas SRDS works with approximately 5600 women in 700 Self Help Groups. In the Gadag District the Self Help Groups are set up in 65 villages. And in the Dharwad area – women in 48 different villages are involved.

Supported by the ICICI Bank and Micrograam Social Development Foundation – we supply microfinance loans to these women to support small entrepreneurs in their business needs. Through these loans the women are enabled to set up enterprise such as Kirana, purchase of livestock e.g. cow or buffalo for milk production, sewing machines to set up tailoring business etc.

The Self Help Groups are a very important part of SRDS work as through the connection and support of the women, the information also about the importance of rain water harvesting and other community based information can be spread. During the COVID crisis some women have been able to employ their tailoring skills to make thousands of protective masks – and all of our women in the SHG’s have been supplied with these.

Through the principles of supporting each other – community is strengthened at the village level.
