Revitalising Community Ponds – A Lifeline for Villages

By | January 20, 2026

In the past two years, SRDS has been involved in rejuvenating large village community ponds throughout the Gadag District. With the support of SBI Foundation and the Azim Premji Foundation, to date, 35 + have been successfully cleaned, de-silted, and readied for storing water for the use of the villagers, surrounding farmers, the livestock in the area, and the wild birds and animals.

The Importance of Community Ponds in Village Ecosystems

Community ponds play a crucial role in the ecosystem of villages. They serve not only as water storage but also as habitats for various species, promoting biodiversity. Local flora and fauna thrive in and around these ponds, creating a vibrant ecosystem. Additionally, these bodies of water can help regulate local climate conditions, contributing to the overall health of the environment.

Moreover, the revitalization efforts have sparked community involvement, with villagers participating in clean-up drives and maintenance of the ponds. Educational workshops are held to raise awareness about the ecological importance of these water bodies. Community members learn about sustainable practices, such as how to prevent pollution and manage water resources effectively. This collective effort fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their natural resources.

The economic benefits of these clean community ponds extend beyond agriculture. They can enhance local tourism, attracting visitors interested in nature, bird watching, and fishing. Villages can organize eco-tourism activities around these ponds, providing additional income sources for local families. This not only helps in economic growth but also emphasizes the importance of preserving natural resources.

As these initiatives continue, it is vital to monitor the health of the ponds regularly. Community-led committees can be established to oversee the ongoing care of these vital resources, ensuring that they are not just cleaned but also maintained. Regular assessments can help identify any new issues, allowing for prompt action to prevent degradation. This proactive approach will ensure the long-term viability of community ponds as key resources for villages.

Furthermore, the presence of clean community ponds can improve public health by providing safe water for drinking, washing, and cooking. Access to clean water reduces the risk of waterborne diseases, which are prevalent in many rural areas. Local health initiatives can be launched to promote hygiene practices linked to water usage, creating a healthier community overall.

These community ponds have been neglected for years, many having become dumping grounds for garbage and overgrown with bushes and weeds. SRDS team utilising an excavator quickly dig out the built-up silt and clean the whole area ready for the inflow of the water during the rains.

Community Ponds being de-silterd and farmers carting awway the silt to use on their land.

This initiative has been very successful benefiting very many people including the farmers who are invited to cart away the valuable silt built up over years of neglect in the base of the community ponds. This silt, when spread on their farmland, enhances the fertility of their soil and increases crop yield.

A fresh source of potable water is available providing water security for the village and also enhancing the percolation of water to the underground aquifer.
