Stories of The Village Women – doing great with Microfinance loans!

This is Bibijan Pathan age -57


She lives in her own house at Kundagol Village, Dharwad District, Karnataka. Her husband passed away two years ago. So she is now her sole supporter. For the past eight years Bibijan as been doing a business selling cloth. She is a member of her local Mabusubani Self Help Group.

Through this group and the support of Sankalpa Rural Development Society (SRDS) she has been able to take a loan of Rs.50,000 from ICICI bank. With this money she has invested in buying raw materials for her cloth business. So she has been able to expand. Before this loan she was only able to earn Rs 200 – 300 per day. Now every day she travels to the nearby villages to sell her fabrics. Every day now she sells to the amount of approx Rs 3,000 taking Rs 1500 profit. She is able to repay her loan instalments regularly without fail. This loan has helped her a lot to build her business and through this she is now living independently. And she even has a future plan to take a another loan to expand her business further.

This is a very positive story about a lady who is growing her business with micro-finance – give her another 2 years and it is likely she will be employing others in her business.. so her entrepreneurial spirit will be passed on for the benefit of more ladies like her.


Sunanda: age – 43


Sunanda lives in rental house in her mother’s village at Kundagol Village, Dharwad District Karnataka. Her husband left her and went away. Previously she was living with her two sons but now her oldest son has moved out and lives separately. Her second son who is still with her is out of work, and drinks a lot. Before she took a loan through her self help group, Laxmi SHG, who are supported by SRDS she was facing many problems and did not have any income. Through this group, the SRDS team motivated her to do something that she knows how to work with. She began her roti business. And is able also now to take care of her son. Sankalapa supported to take the loan from ICICI Bank. She borrowed Rs.50000 from them, and invested this money into her roti business to buy Javar, Gas and raw materials. Each day she makes 200 rotis and earns Rs 1000 – with a profit of Rs5-600. She makes the roti by hand.. they are delicious.. and she is a hard working women who is getting more orders every day. She has a future plan to buy a roti making machine which will help her business grow.


Sangeeta R Gididennavar Age -32

Sangeeta lives in her own house at Kundagol Village, Dharwad District, Karnataka. She has two children who are going to school (4th and 7th). Her husband is doing wall painting and when he is available he supports her in the shop. Before Sangeeta took her loan only her husband was working and it was very hard to manage their livelihood. They were not able to manage the school fees of the children on his small money. She was a member of Laxmi SHG. The SRDS team visited the SHG through their connection with the ICICI Bank offered her a loan to start a business. Sangeeta borrowed Rs 50,000 from ICIC and began a stationary shop in her village of Kundagol. She used the loan to by stock of stationary items for the shop. Now each day she earns Rs.3000 and gets net profit Rs.500. This income is helping her and her family to manage their livelihood easily and she is able to pay the children’s school fees. She is now planing to add a cloth business in the future.. and will take another loan to support that vision.
